Sapphire or blue sapphire is the king of the blue gemstone. Because of its bright and clear blue color, blue sapphire is considered rare and expensive. It is within the corundum with 9 hardness levels in the Mohs Scale. In the past, blue sapphire symbolized wellness in life. It was popularly used among the royal families to prevent calamity and viciousness. Due to its popularity among the noble and upper class, the quantity of new sapphire being discovered has been drastically decreased over time. Because of this reason, high-quality sapphire is highly demanded in the market, leading to its luxurious price.
High-quality sapphire should have a deep blue color (Not too dark and not too pale). The best among all the sapphires is the “royal blue color” which is named after the blue sapphire worn by the royal in the past. This sapphire is mostly found in Ceylon or Srilanka. Other important sources are
Madagascar: is not as expensive as Ceylon Sapphire, but is popularly used among jewelers and sellers because the quality is almost the same as Ceylon.
Nigeria: has a bright colour but not as clear as Madagascar and Ceylon. It is popular among the sellers due to its lower price.
Australia: has a dark, not so clear blue colour leading to the cheapest price among other sapphires.

พลอยไพลินที่ดี จะต้องมีประกายสีน้ำเงินกำมะหยี่ สดใส ไม่ขุ่น และไม่ดำจนเกินไป สีที่ถูกยกย่องว่าสวยที่สุดในบรรดาพลอยไพลินคือสี Royal Blue ‘รอยัลบลู’ และมักมาจากซีลอน ประเทศศรีลังกา แหล่งแร่ไพลินที่สำคัญอื่นๆได้แก่
ประเทศมาดากัสการ์ ที่แม้จะไม่ถูกยกย่องว่ามีพลอยไพลินที่สวยงามเท่ากับซีลอน แต่ก็มีการค้นพบไพลินที่เป็นประกายสวยไม่แพ้กัน
ประเทศในจีเรีย ไพลินมาบิล่า เป็นไพลินที่มีปรายสีน้ำเงินสวย แต่จะมีควมเข้มกว่า ส่งผลให้มีราคาที่ถูกลง จึงมักเป็นที่นิยมในหมู่พ่อค้าพลอย
ประเทศออสเตรเลีย ไพลินที่ถูกค้นพบจะมีความเข้มมากกว่าประเทศอื่น เนื้อพลอยที่ขุ่น และประกายค่อนข้างน้อย มีราคาที่ถูก
